Overview

This KB article explains how to restore a deleted OneDrive for Business (personal site) for a user in CloudAid365 (Microsoft 365) using PowerShell. It also covers granting access to another user if the original account has been deleted.

Note: By default, OneDrive content is retained for 30 days after user deletion, but in CloudAid365, the retention period is extended to 93 days. During this period, the OneDrive site can be restored even if the user account has been soft-deleted or license removed.

Prerequisites

  • You must have SharePoint Administrator or Global Administrator privileges.

  • SharePoint Online Management Shell installed. Download Link

  • Target user's email/UPN.

  • Admin account to assign as a temporary site collection administrator.

Steps to Restore a Deleted OneDrive

Step 1: Connect to SharePoint Online

Open PowerShell as administrator and run:

Connect-SPOService -Url https://<tenant>-admin.sharepoint.com

Replace <tenant> with your actual tenant name.

Step 2: List Deleted OneDrive Sites

Get-SPODeletedSite -IncludePersonalSite | Where-Object {$_.Url -like "*username*"}
  • Replace "*username*" with the deleted user’s UPN or part of the email.

  • Confirm the correct site using the Url or Owner fields.

Step 3: Restore the Deleted OneDrive Site

Restore-SPODeletedSite -Identity https://<tenant>-my.sharepoint.com/personal/<username>_<domain>_com
  • Replace <tenant> and <username> with your tenant and user info.

  • Restoration may take a few minutes to complete.

Step 4: Assign Site Collection Admin to Another User

Set-SPOUser -Site https://<tenant>-my.sharepoint.com/personal/<username>_<domain>_com -LoginName admin@domain.com -IsSiteCollectionAdmin $true
  • Replace admin@domain.com with the user who should access the OneDrive.

Step 5: Access the Restored OneDrive

Open the following URL in a browser:

https://<tenant>-my.sharepoint.com/personal/<username>_<domain>_com

You can now access all files as the assigned site collection admin.

Retention Notes

  • In CloudAid365, OneDrive data is retained for 93 days after the user is deleted.

  • During this period:

    • The OneDrive can be restored via PowerShell.

    • Access can be assigned to another admin.

  • After 93 days, the data is permanently deleted unless a retention policy, legal hold, or backup solution was applied.
